Gary’s Insurance Experience

In October 1982, Gary passed the California Life and Health Insurance Agent Exam and began selling life insurance to people in their homes. At the end of 1983, Gary received the branch salesperson of the year award. On award presentation day, the Regional Vice President visited his branch office. The Vice President noticed a trophy honoring each month’s “Sales Person of the Month.” While viewing the trophy, he asked our branch manager, “How could Gary Smith possibly become Salesperson of the Year without ever being Salesperson of the Month?” The Branch Manager answered with one word: “Consistency.”

In June 1984, Gary left Metropolitan to join Principal Financial Group. In 1987, Gary conceived of and developed Principal Mutual Life’s physician’s disability insurance program. Principal Mutual Life expanded nationwide to its 2,000 salespeople their physician’s disability insurance program. Gary envisioned the program during the Vice President of Marketing’s visit to promote target marketing. The Vice President visited every one of the company’s 100 offices. In addition to receiving monetary rewards, the Vice President of Marketing flew Gary to the home office in Des Moines, Iowa, to join him for lunch. Out of 2,000 salespeople, Gary was the only one to create a target marketing program like the Vice President requested.

In July 2025, Gary started primarily selling and servicing Final Expense or Burial Insurance. Gary offers Final Expense or Burial Insurance for over ten insurance companies.
